Rob and Ruth met at a DC singles event
called FriendSwap in March of 2005. By
that point, Ruth had concluded that most single DC
men were tedious, ugly, and/or dim, but didn’t
have better plans when the Valentine’s Day
sign-up deadline rolled around. Rob of course
had a wildly successful dating career, and was just
looking to meet even more women.
FriendSwap was the brainchild of a
group of friends who started it by setting up
a few of their friends. At some point they
set up a spreadsheet, and then a Web site. This
effort eventually mushroomed into an event where several
hundred people were matched based on a short personal
questionnaire.
Rob and Ruth’s first date was
coffee at Café L’Enfant, in Adams Morgan. Since
it was a cold March day, Ruth wore a turtleneck and
a long skirt. Ruth was also a little reserved. Based
on Ruth's dress and demeanor, Rob thought that
Ruth must be quite conservative and not very interested. However,
since it actually turned out that Rob met Ruth’s
minimal standards (he’s not a troll!) Ruth broke all dating
rules and e-mailed Rob the very next day to say
she had a good time. Things continued to improve
from then on....
